History

In the summer 2000, Clay Carver and Dave Cowan moved with their families from New Orleans to Baltimore. Their dream was to start relevant and highly communal churches. In the fall of 2000, a small group of people started meeting together. They shared Clay’s and Dave’s vision for a different kind of church.

By October of 2001, a few small groups, known as Link Groups, had been meeting regularly. At that time, they decided officially to launch Horizon Church to the community. On Sunday mornings, Horizon met in the Owings Mills AMC theater. During the week, Link Groups met in homes and apartments.

By February 2003, Horizon Church had grown to the capacity of the largest theater in the Owings Mills AMC. Horizon never hoped to be a large church. The desire was always to be small and multiply into many small churches. So a group was sent out to start a new Horizon Church in the Towson area.

In October of 2004, Horizon Church of Towson was officially launched to the community. For the first few years, Horizon Towson grew as a young church dependant on the help of Horizon Owings Mills. By January 2006, Horizon Church of Towson became its own entity. Now both churches function as sister churches to each other. The hope is that both communities will continue to plant churches and be a part of transforming the Baltimore area.
